Ravaged, Ravished, Raped, Rapid?!

Scott, Spencer, and I were having a discussion last night at dinner about the difference between "ravaged" and "ravished." Eventually we turned to the dictionary, and were not surprised to learn that the two words are almost identical in etymology. "Raped" is also from the same word root. However, the truly odd development was that "rapid" is closely related to these other words, and comes from the same idea of "to seize; to sweep away." That makes sense in the case of river rapids, to be sure, but I would say that of these four words, "rapid" has definitely gone the furthest astray from its original meaning!
